About the Summer Reading Challenge
PictureThe Summer Reading Challenge is an annual national programme from the Reading Agency that helps children aged 4 - 11 years keep up their reading skills. The programme encourages them to read six books during the long summer holiday.

The Summer Reading Challenge is free. All you need to take part is a library card, which you can get by joining any library in the borough.

Slip and Slide
The theme for 2017 was Animal Agents – children collected clues in their detective folder, and got special rewards for each book they read, as well as smelly stickers and a certificate and medal if they finish!

The Challenge started on Saturday 15 July 2017 and ran to 30th September 2017.

Animal Agents theme

The 2017 summer reading challenge theme was Animal Agents, with the characters illustrated by the UK’s best-selling children’s illustrator Tony Ross who illustrates the Horrid Henry series.

Animal Agents is a detective agency manned by all kinds of clever animals – furry, scaly and slippery – and these guys are out to crack the case with a little help from their friends.

By collecting clues in their detective folder, children can solve the case of the graffiti writing or the strange case of a missing lunch, and join in the fun with the Animal Agents by reading along.

There were lots of Animal Agent activities in our libraries: treasure hunts; face painting; special author visits and other ‘animal visitors’; as well as craft sessions where you could make your own spy binoculars or stretchy bloodhound.

There was also the opportunity to volunteer for a few hours a week for people aged 15+.

Next year’s Challenge will be Beano themed!
