BHM Displays
Downham Library will be featuring different aspects of Black History Month throughout October, including a children’s interactive art display, teen interactive art display, Famous Faces Family Quiz, local artist installations, BHM Book Displays for children and adults, and the BHM Wall of Fame.

Deptford Lounge will be featuring different aspects of Black History Month throughout their October film programme, with free films on most evenings.
Mondays and Wednesdays: 5 - 7pm

Talk: Agents of Freedom: The Black Jacobin

Paul Crooks discusses the Haitian revolution and asks, “Was Toussaint L’Overture the greatest black leader of the modern black history era?” Paul uses the backdrop of the Haitian revolution to reveal the overlooked truth about how slaves who brought about the demise of slavery in the British dominions.

Guyana, Amerindian Youth and Applied Theatre with Fatima Dupres-Griffiths

Come, experience a unique collaboration with Amerindian youth in Guyana’s rain forest- using drama-film/voice recordings by Fatima Dupres-Griffiths June/July 2018.

Using film footage,voice recordings and personal accounts, Fatima Dupres-Griffiths, a film-maker, poet, actor captures this unique Applied Theatre collaboration with vulnerable Amerindian youth indigenous to Guyana, South America.For this BHM presentation, she will share her vision of The I Can Project’s aim: to shift negative perceptions of indigenous peoples globally, commencing with the mutual transformation and healing that took place on this once in a life time trip, June/July 2018.

Talk: The Baptists Who Abolished Slavery

Was it 'WILBERFORCE?' or 'WILL-BY-FORCE?' Paul Crooks discusses the Baptist War, challenging his audience to embrace the achievements of ancestors enslaved in the Caribbean; i.e. their amazing courage, resilience, and participation in their own liberation. Paul asks, ‘What can we learn from the period of enslavement moving forward into the future?’

Arrival: Dorcas Stories

Join Goldsmiths designer and lecturer, Rose Sinclair, for an afternoon of talks and textiles exploring the legacy of Dorcas Societies. Alongside Caribbean textiles, people of all ages and backgrounds are invited to share their audio stories of arrival in London with The Conversation Booth. A mobile recording facility encouraging conversation, listening and archiving. Designed by Goldsmiths MA student, Nicole Robson, it’s part of the Mayor of London’s ‘Arrival’ work, ‘Celebrating Windrush and the Communities who followed’.

Arrival: Beyond Windrush
Goldsmiths anthropologist, Audrey Allwood, invites people of all backgrounds to tell their stories of arrival in London through objects or images. Celebrate and explore an important period in British social and cultural life by bringing along an item that is helps you tell your story of arrival in London, whether you came from elsewhere in the UK, Europe or further afield. Audrey’s research focuses on elderly people who migrated from the Caribbean to London in the ‘Windrush’ era. As the recent scandal has led many to question their sense of place and belonging in London, Audrey explores the positive impact and legacy of Caribbean culture on London life.
