We have many free and low cost activities for children and babies in Lewisham Libraries. Children(under 14) get free computer reservations and 3 pages of printing per day, for their homework. They also do not need to pay for reservations or fines. In all our libraries we purchase books, including digital books that win awards, help inspire, delight and educate young minds.
Older children and teenagers have access to a host of encyclopaedias, dictionaries and newspapers which are great for homework. These can be accessed from home.

Book Reservations and Fines

Visits and Partnerships with Lewisham Local Education
Lewisham Library Staff regularly visit local educational organisations such as Nurseries, Primary schools, Secondary schools and Health Centres. They deliver books and read stories to classes and groups which introduces them to a wide range of characters and stories.
Nursery Visits
On our regular visits to local nurseries, library staff deliver a handpicked selection of about 30 books. They also read to the children and sing songs with them. Staff also deliver Book Start Treasure Packs annually.Class Visits for Primary Schools
Library staff also attend schools in Lewisham, they do talks at school assemblies and attend fetes and summer fairs. For the Summer Reading Challenge staff hand out awards and invite them to events happening in the library that they may be interested. There are also Primary schools that are branches of Lewisham Libraries, these are Haseltine and Rathfern schools. We also buy books and are hoping to set up a school library on our LMS (one card for school and the local library) at St Mary’s and St John the Baptist schools. The schools are fundraising towards this.
Year 7 Library Membership offer
Lewisham Library and Information Service are working with five schools to give a library card to all Year 7 students – and to show them the amazing range of services being a card-carrying member unlocks! The schools we are currently working with are: Sedgehill, Forest Hill Boys, Sydenham School, Bonus Pastor and Prendergast Vale. The Lewisham Book Award and the Lewisham Book Challenge
These annual book prizes are awarded by the Borough’s secondary school children. Years 7 and 8 (11-13 year olds) read and decide on the Lewisham Book Award, but the voices of 13-14 year old Year 9 students matter most when it comes to the Book Challenge. Every year students attend the Book Quiz – last year ably compered by our own Andrew Mohammed. The highlight of the Awards is when students from all participating schools come together to champion one of the shortlisted books and to pitch to the Borough’s “dragons” – including two Lewisham public librarians last year. Every year the books are bought and displayed in libraries as well as in school libraries and we await the announcement of the winner with interest.Lewisham Library Service staff now regularly attend the secondary school librarians meetings, so there should be an even closer working relationship in the future. We also work with Secondary Schools around the Summer Reading Challenge.
Health Centres for Children
Staff also attend all of Lewisham's Health Centres and arrange for Book Trust Baby Packs to be delivered across Lewisham. If you would like us to visit your nursery or school, please contact the Hub Library closest to you
