Are you STRESSED? Our Libraries can help

STRESS - is what the Mental Health Foundation are focussing on this year in their Mental Health Awareness Week 14-20 May.  “Research has shown that 16 million people experience a mental health problem each year,” explains the Mental Health Foundation, “and stress is a key factor in this.”
Below is their list of stress factors and the suggested strategies for coping are on their website, link below.

  • feelings of constant worry or anxiety
  • feelings of being overwhelmed
  • difficulty concentrating
  • mood swings or changes in your mood
  • irritability or having a short temper
  • difficulty relaxing
  • depression
  • low self-esteem
  • eating more or less than usual
  • changes in your sleeping habits
  • using alcohol, tobacco or illegal drugs to relax
  • aches and pains, particularly muscle tension
  • diarrhoea and constipation
  • feelings of nausea or dizziness
  • loss of sex drive

According to the mental health charity MIND approximately 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year but only 1 in 8 adults with a mental health problem is currently receiving treatment. But reading can also help reduce stress levels by 68 per cent, according to the University of Sussex research. They found even six minutes can be enough to reduce stress levels and it works better and faster than other methods to calm frazzled nerves such as listening to music, going for a walk or settling down with a cup of tea, research found as the Telegraph Newspaper reports.  So perhaps take a look at all the popular fiction and best sellers that arrive into our libraries each week.
Just a taster below of the top 10 bestselling fiction books at the moment:

    • Fools and mortals / Bernard Cornwell
    • Tell tale / Jeffrey Archer
