Lewisham Libraries presented the author Ronke Odewumi at Lewisham and Southwark College (LeSoCo) to students at the Learning Centre on Thursday 26 April. The students have all signed up to the Reading Ahead Challenge and this event was to inspire them to finish the challenge.
Ronke is a British author of
African descent and her new novel The Lost Khaki Girls published this year, is set in Nigeria, in
the metropolitan cities of Lagos and Jos. The
story follows the journey of three young women, highlighting the different African cultures while telling a story of love,
betrayal and murder.
Ronke talked about how she started to write and sell stories at the age of 9 for her friends, these were handwritten in exercise books, and each time she rewrote the story she embellished it and so the story got longer and longer. Ronke took two years to write The Lost Khaki Girls and her tips for those wanting to write is just to do it - start writing something - you need to practise. She read some of her favourite bits from her novel aloud before taking questions from the audience.
Juan and Kat showed the students the free online e-resources that Lewisham offers, and our newspapers from around the world and our e-magazines received the most interest.
