The Summer Reading Challenge is here again! The theme for 2018 is Mischief Makers, inspired by the much-loved children's title Beano, which celebrates its 80th anniversary.
Children will explore a map of Beanotown to find the mysterious buried treasure and become ultimate mischief makers! Dennis, Gnasher and friends will help them solve clues and collect stickers, having lots of fun and adventures along the way!
The RNIB National Library Service makes a selection of Summer Reading Challenge books available in accessible formats (Braille, Audio and Giant Print) for children who are visually impaired, or have visually impaired parents/carers. This material can also help children with learning disabilities and dyslexia.
The summer reading challenge takes place every year during the summer holidays. It is an annual, national programme from the Reading Agency that helps children aged 4 - 11 years keep up their reading skills.
Last year, a total of 761,758 children across the UK took part in Animal Agents, the 2017 Summer Reading Challenge, at their local libraries.
The programme encourages children to read six books during the long summer holiday.
which you can get by joining any library in the borough. You can sign up at your local library, then read six library books of your choice, collecting stickers and other rewards along the way.
What To Read?
You can have a look in our catalogue or look through our ebooks.
Sometimes picking the best thing to read can take longer than it does to actually read the book!
Some children read books by their favourite authors or stick to a theme, such as only books with dinosaurs in it. Another option is to use the Book sorter. The Book Sorter is full of books to pick chosen by other children.
Older Children/Teens
If your child is aged 13 to 24 and would like to do reading activities and volunteering. They can find out more on Reading Hack . To volunteer for the Summer Reading Challenge, please ask in individual branches.
