Library Services for Arabic Speakers in Lewisham Libraries



Are you or someone you know, a native Arabic speaker who is learning English as a second language?  Did you know there are many services you can access in your local library to help your progress?
In Lewisham Libraries we have a small collection of books in Arabic for children and adults, emagazines in Arabic and learning resources for the ESOL learners.

We have a small collection of about 80 magazines and newspapers in Arabic


Press Reader

We have a small selection of newspapers and magazines in Arabic. You can access these through the Press Reader app or the Press Reader website.  Register with your library card for 30 days of access which you can renew as many times as you want. You can access 32 magazines and 48 newspapers.

Support for Entrepreneurs(SiLL)

Start-ups in London Libraries (SiLL) is a free programme designed to help aspiring entrepreneurs gain the skills, information and know-how to build a viable business.

If you have always wanted to start a business, or have just taken your first steps into entrepreneurship, the programme can help you get business support and turn your idea into a reality.

What you will get

You can get a range of free services including:
  • free quarterly workshops for aspiring entrepreneurs and early stage start-ups
  • walk-in access to business resources and databases like COBRA
  • One-to-one business information sessions with borough SME champions
  • a programme of events, including live screenings from the British Library’s Business & IP Centre.
Once completed, you will be awarded a personalised Start-ups in London Libraries certificate.

You will also meet like-minded people and gain the confidence you need to make your business a success!
Who can take part
To take part you need to be:
the owner of a business which is either not trading or has been registered at Companies House for less than 12 months an aspiring entrepreneur with a business idea you want to develop.

Multi-Lingual Advice & Information Hub


For people for whom English is not their first language


We offer a drop-in service to support with accessing advice and information including welfare benefit, housing, debt, mental health and consumer advice.

Lewisham Refugee and Migrant Network



Refugees, asylum seekers and migrant communities in the London Borough of Lewisham and surrounding boroughs.


Area of advice:


Asylum and Immigration – for refugees and asylum seekers in Lewisham OISC Level 3 immigration advice). Generalist advice, welfare benefits, homelessness, housing, debt, employment and health advice for people in Lewisham and neighbouring boroughs. Please note we also provide immigration advice outside Lewisham.

Healthwatch Lewisham

Healthwatch Lewisham is the independent champion for people who use health and social care services. We exist to ensure that people are at the heart of care. We listen to what people like about services, and what could be improved and we share their views with those with the power to make change happen.

At a local level, Healthwatch Lewisham works to help local people get the best out of their local health and social care services. Whether it’s improving them today or helping to shape them for tomorrow. Healthwatch Lewisham is all about local voices being able to influence the delivery and design of local services. Not just people who use them, but anyone who might need to in future

 

 

Refugee Council



Refugee families displaced from their homes will be resettled in Lewisham, south east London, under an extension of the existing Vulnerable Person’s Resettlement Scheme and Vulnerable Children’s Resettlement schemes. It will see the Refugee Council working in partnership with Lewisham Refugee and Migrant Network (LRMN).

As part of Lewisham Council’s commitment to becoming a Borough of Sanctuary, the Council has pledged to welcome a further hundred refugee families to the borough, in addition to seventeen families welcomed in 2017. The Council’s resettlement programme takes a collaborative approach, comprising the Council, a professional support provider and volunteers from the local community. With the expansion of the programme, the Council has appointed the Refugee Council and Lewisham Refugee and Migrant Network to act as the professional support provider for arriving refugee families.
