Homework Resources

We have a host of free, quality databases that can help with your homework. All you need is your library card to get started.
 

Oxford Reference
Access a vast online reference library containing over 212 titles on a variety of topics including science, history and the arts.
It combines in-depth content offered by titles in the acclaimed Oxford Companions series with authoritative, quick-reference coverage of the full subject range



 
 


Britannica Junior
Britannica Junior is aimed at young enquiring minds of 5 to 11 years old. Fantastic resources for homework, projects and assignments. Key features include News of the Day provided by CBBC, Explore the Animal Kingdom, Word Wall, Geography Explorer Game & World Atlas together with subject articles, images, videos and biographies.
 
 

Credo Reference
Credo is a giant online reference library that enables you to search more than 3 million full text articles in 1,138 reference books.
It includes encyclopaedias, dictionaries, thesauri and books of quotations, not to mention a range of subject-specific titles covering everything from art to accountancy and literature to law.

 
 


Oxford English Dictionary
The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is a historical dictionary,and is very different from Dictionaries of current English, in which the focus is on present-day meanings. You’ll still find present-day meanings in the OED, but you’ll also find the history of individual words, and of the language—traced through 3 million quotations, from classic literature and specialist periodicals to film scripts and cookery books.
 
 

Historical Newspapers

We have newspapers dating back to 1785. Find out how stories were reported what 18th century Londoners did as well as what types of products were being advertised in 1985. Newspapers include:
  • 19th Century British Library Newspapers- 1800-1860
  • Times Digital Archive 1785 to 2007
  • Illustrated London News Historical Archive 1842 to 2003

Have you always meant to learn French. Want to learn how to talk to your Italian friends? Are you planning a shopping trip to Poland soon?

To practice your languages you can use our subscriptions to read foreign language magazines in OverDrive and foreign language newspapers in Press Reader.

You could also read a few books set in the city you are going to visit.

If you are curious about a topic, would like a refresher or just brushing up on your skills.

 


 We have many different titles that give information  lots of different topics. Two of the best known and longest running series are the For Dummies and Haynes Guides.
 
For Dummies Series
The For Dummies series covers topics such as car repair, computers, science, programming, Home and repair.
Dummies is the platform that makes learning anything easy because it transforms the hard-to-understand into easy-to-use.

 
Hayes Manual Series
Haynes is a long running series that does lifestyle manuals, motorcycle manuals and car manuals.
Hayes originates and delivers practical automotive repair and maintenance information to motorists and enthusiasts in both a print and digital format across the world. Haynes also publishes a range of brand extension titles covering a wide variety of subjects styled on the iconic Haynes Manual. They have titles such as


  • Haynes running manual
  • Hayes Ford Focus owner's workshop manual
  • The Haynes manual on practical electrical systems
  • Haynes pig manual, the complete step-by-step guide to keeping pigs
