You know what I enjoy most about these Silly Squad blogs? I get to tell you lot about all these awesome books I read as a kid. One author I used to love was Jacqueline Wilson. In fact the most recent Tracy Beaker book was about her as a mum with a kid of her own was actually really cool to see as someone who has grown up with the books.
Controversially though the Tracy Beaker books are not my favourite ones by Jacqueline Wilson.
That would be Cliffhanger.
I remember being read Cliffhanger back in primary school, many, many years ago, and loving it.
I loved it so that when my parents bought me a treat from the school book sale after the next parents evening I knew what book I wanted straight away.
It all starts with Tim.
He's a boy who likes maths and English. He hates
sports. He thinks it's the worst. So one day when his dad suggests a
summer activity camp he isn't happy.
He reminds his dad that's not
something he enjoys, so does his mum.
His dad however doesn't listen and books him a place on it anyway. Tim gets left at the camp feeling miserable after promising to write to his mum everyday. When his parents leave Tim thinks the day can't get any worse until he sees his beloved teddy bear looking at him from the back window of the car.
Tim gets taken inside by the guy looking after the boys at the camp. He's called Jake which is a great name by the way.
Tim gets taken up to the bedroom he is sharing with the friendly Biscuit who helps Tim get used to the camp and shares his biscuits with him.
There's also Giles, a mean, rude boy who calls Tim a baby. Biscuit however gives Giles a nickname, Piles. They go down to the hall and meet the girls including the brave Kelly and her toy Troll.
Tim reluctantly embarks on a week of activities.
There's rounders (which he doesn't like), Abseiling which is terrifying! There's a canoeing trip which goes astray, before the famous obstacle course.
How will Tim get on? And can he figure out the winning trick? You will have to read for yourself to find out!
Cliffhanger is a fun, fast paced story with lots of excitement!
I still fondly remember it now. I'm giving it a 7/10. Fancy checking it out for yourself?
