Our sixteenth blog linked to Lewisham Voices Facebook video posts, is part of a weekly series where the stories, memories, poems and writing from people who lived, worked or wrote about the area of Lewisham are shared.
Artist Yvonne Devine created a series of art works (mainly oils) called Spirit of Lewisham which was hung in the front display windows of Lewisham Library. The exhibition was due to come down in March this year but has remained there throughout Covid 19 displaying the vibrancy of the local area.
Yvonne talks about her art and the video shows images from her exhibition on the link below.
Yvonne Devine is a self-employed mature Irish UK born artist who draws and paints the world around her in a variety of media, acrylic paint, pastels, pen and ink, charcoal and more because 'diversity is the spice of life'! She is based in Sidcup, Southeast London but has lived in Bellingham, Catford and enjoys the vibrancy and life of local areas.
Yvonne qualified in Conceptual Sculpture, Interior Design and Marketing. She has a 30 year retail career working for designers in Ireland and the UK, including Laura Ashley. She loves independent makers, travel, learning about other cultures, photography, furniture design, comedy and psychology. She has shown and sold her work in independent galleries in southeast London and in the Urban Brixton Art Fair 2019.
Yvonne wanted to capture an essence of the 'spirit of Lewisham', its community, colour and activities. Included in the artworks are Sandy's Hair Shop in the Shopping Centre and Sakhi fabrics near Lewisham Station and a few scenes from the famous fruit and veg market!
These original artworks can be purchased by contacting the artist to make payment and can be collected when the exhibition ends.

Yvonne's current series of work is called 'Canary Wharfare' - see images on left. This is a satirical look at the 'average lifecycle of a corporate worker' with a social message to remind people to have a good work life balance. It is semi-autobiographical.
